L'artiste, dans le sens le plus profond, est un instrument de son oeuvre : il est, si j'ose dire, au-dessous d'elle ;
c'est d'ailleurs pourquoi nous ne pouvons jamais attendre de lui une interprétation de sa propre oeuvre.
Il a fait son acte suprême en lui prêtant forme.
L'interprétation, il doit l'abandonner aux autres, et ainsi à l'avenir.

The artist is, in the most profound sense, an instrument of his work.  He is, if I may so express it,

in a sense lower than it.

And that is why we should never expect of him an interpretation of his own work.

He has performed his supreme act in giving it form.

He must leave the interpreting of it to others, and to the future.
